The high aspect ratios and the ability to select narrow particle size distributions leads to the formation of domains of aligned plates. Selecting higher aspect ratio kaolinites by selective mining and rapid measurement of average aspect ratio greatly enhances the mineral liquid crystal domain formation. High volume fraction suspensions in say glycerin can be used to mitigate the effects of impact damage and be part of a protective structure.
